From a childhood in the Rio Grande Valley to her service as a U.S. Army Nurse Corps officer, Dr. Eloisa Garcia Tamez has lived a life defined by courage, service, and leadership.
She is a civil rights activist, a co-founder of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, a professor, and an Army colonel. In 2024, she was named a Leader and Legend of Texas Nursing — an honor reserved for those whose contributions have transformed healthcare locally, statewide, and nationally.
For Dr. Tamez, leadership has never meant having all the answers. It has meant listening, building teams, and creating opportunities where none existed before. From helping launch the Rio Grande Valley’s only psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program to mentoring countless students at UTRGV, she has carried forward a legacy of resilience, education, and advocacy.
Her words to aspiring nurses remain clear: “It is important for you, as a professional nurse, to belong to an organization. They protect us and our practice.”
